Organized youth hockey came to South Bend in 1968 with the opening of the Notre Dame
Athletic and Convocation Center. The program grew to the point in 1975 when a second ice rink in
South Bend opened on the city’s near west side and was called the ICE BOX.
In 1981, a not-for profit corporation called South Bend Youth Hockey, Inc. was created
for the purpose of operating the ICE BOX. With the continued growth of youth, high school, and senior
leagues; along with the potential for increased figure and public skating usage, the ICE BOX added a second rink
and accompanying facilities that represented a $2.5 million expansion and improvement effort in 1999.
Today, the ICE BOX has generated and is accommodating the requests for additional team
practice times, more figure skating, and public skating opportunities, and requests for regional tournaments
and competitions.
Our bottom-line objective is to make ice hockey, figure skating, and open public skating accessible and affordable.
